It all started over 50 years ago when our founder and his wife, Tom and Winnie Jackson began selling a small selection of hats, boots, and tack. While it’s no surprise that a western store should offer you western shirts, jeans, and other accessories, you won’t get many arguments about the necessity of boots and hats. It’s hard to say which one, in particular, is more central to the role of the iconic western look, but suffice it to say, they are both completely inseparable from western history and western fashion. A cowboy without a hat and boots isn’t much of a cowboy.

That’s one of the reasons that we here at Jackson’s English & Western Store have such a large inventory of western boots and hats. In fact, we are home to Michigan’s largest collection of cowboy hats - and boots. We have more of each than any other supplier in our home state.

While the first hats were made from felted wool, waterproof, and with a wide brim to protect the wearer from the sun, today, western hats are made from leather and straw as well. A Word on the Services We Offer

-Boot fitting and stretching services - Cowboy boots, especially high-quality boots like those that we sell here in our store, are not like other shoes. They’re not even really like other boots. To get the right fit from a pair of real leather cowboy boots, they need to be fitted and stretched. A given pair of boots in your size just might fit you passably out of the gate, but if you want that custom-fit that so many people love about leather shoes and cowboy boots, you’ll have to get them fitted and possibly even stretched. Some other providers charge for services like these, but when you stop by our store and pick up a pair of boots from our collection, we’ll do it for you, right there, free of charge.

-Boot break-in services - Boot fitting and stretching services aren’t all you need to get that custom fit from a pair of western boots. It’s a start, but it doesn’t finish the job. Just like any pair of work boots, western boots need to be broken in. Only with western boots, the break-in process is more lengthy, time-consuming, and uncomfortable for the person doing it.

That is if you do it on your own time in your own ways. There are a million and one ‘popular’ tricks for breaking in western boots, ranging from wearing them for a few days or weeks with several pairs of socks to soaking them in water before you wear them. Each of these methods - and others - is time-consuming and uncomfortable, but without being broken in, even a good pair of boots will be terribly uncomfortable.

Again, this is a service for which others might charge a fee, but when you come to our store to get your next pair of western boots, we’ll break them in for you before you even walk out the doors. You’ll be well on your way to a personalized fit in no time.

-Boot repair - Have you worn out your soles? Are they starting to separate from the uppers? Are your uppers themselves starting to show their age? Maybe you could use a new footbed?

Saying goodbye to a faithful pair of boots is painful, and often unnecessary. Among our list of expert services, we also provide boot repairs. If your favorite pair of boots is on its last legs, bring them to us and we’ll see what’s wrong. We’ll fix them up just like new and have you on your way.
