How To Dress Like the Duttons, According to the Costume Designer for Yellowstone

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past five years, then you might have already heard about Yellowstone. Now on its fifth season, this captivating neo-Western drama series about a family in Montana and the ranch that they’ve sworn to protect–against all odds–has become a television phenomenon.

Created by Taylor Sheridan and featuring an all-star cast led by the likes of Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly, Luke Grimes, and more, Yellowstone is the most-watched series on cable today, and for good reason, inspiring Western fashion trends among its most devoted fans who are now embracing ‘cowboy culture’ in their lives–at least, sartorially. Here’s how to dress like the formidable members of the Dutton family, according to series costume designer Johnetta Boone:

John Dutton - played by Kevin Costner

Known affectionately among those who work on the show as “J.D.”, John Dutton is the patriarch of the Dutton family, and his motivations and decisions are the driving force behind everything that happens on his beloved Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

In earlier seasons, John served as the Livestock Commissioner for the state of Montana before going on to become its governor in season 5–all in service of protecting his beloved ranch from outside forces. This led to a shift on how the character is styled, going from jeans and western jackets to tailored black business suits.

If you want to dress like John Dutton from the first 4 seasons of the show, start by getting yourself a few western jackets.

John owns what Boone refers to as the iconic “JD Jacket”, a taupe piece with a rust-colored western yoke. You can find similar items like it in our western jackets section here at Jackson’s Western Store, from brands like Ariat, Cinch, Wrangler, and more. The character also prefers wearing specific brands for his jeans because he’s a practical man who knows what fits him well and doesn’t want to fix what ain’t broke, as they say. You can also find a wide selection of men’s jeans here on our website.

As governor of Montana, Boone dresses John Dutton in attire that is appropriate for his new position–business suits are de rigeur for the character in the series’ 5th season. He may have had to trade his tall cowboy boots in for short cowboy dress boots that fit better under tailored trousers, but he is never seen without his signature cowboy hat. Boone notes that the character matches the hat color to whatever color suit he is wearing for the day for a more streamlined overall look.

Beth Dutton - played by Kelly Reilly

“I am the tornado.” Mercurial and worldly, Beth Dutton is John’s only daughter who will do anything to protect her father’s interests–on the show, she is quoted as saying “His (John) dream is my Alamo, and I will die on the wall defending it.” Her father urged her to study finance, and her business savvy has saved the ranch–more than once–from those that would prey on it.

Beth, decidedly, is a city girl–she has no interest in ranch life, and her wardrobe reflects as much.

Very rarely is Beth seen in jeans or trousers: instead, she prefers dresses and business suits, all cut impeccably to showcase her figure. Fans of Beth shouldn’t have a hard time finding dresses that fit the character’s aesthetic in our Women’s Dresses section. Boone notes that she wears a lot of florals, often against a dark background of black or navy blue. Like her father and siblings, she is almost always in cowboy boots when in casual wear–when Beth means business, she dresses for the part and switches to designer high heels.

Kayce Dutton - played by Luke Grimes

Kayce is John’s wayward youngest son, a man who is torn between the shadow that his father casts and the love of his life–his own wife and son. In season 5, Kayce is faced with a terrible tragedy at home and has to decide between his duty to his father or caring for his wife Monica and son Tate.

The character’s color palette, according to Boone, has remained relatively unchanged from earlier seasons–he’s a cowboy through and through. Boone also notes that Kayce has the most grounded wardrobe out of everyone in the show, his colors reflecting the earth–all of his clothes are either brown or in a tone of brown.

With our menswear selections here on Jackson’s Western Store, dressing like Kayce Dutton is a cinch.

Just think of your quintessential American cowboy and you’ve already got most of his style down. Jeans and western jackets that fit well, a sturdy pair of cowboy boots, and a cowboy hat that looks like it’s seen some adventure are all staples of Kayce’s wardrobe.
